Top ski resorts close to Innsbruck

Best resorts under 1 hour away

If you want to fly into a city for a weekend and catch a bus (or even a taxi!) to a nearby resort, then there’s no better option than Innsbruck. There’s a whole host of resorts less than an hour’s drive from the city, so let’s round up the best below.

Nordkette

Nordkette
  • Where: Innsbruck
  • Distance from Innsbruck: 11km, 30 minutes
  • Skiable terrain: 13km
  • Elevation: 860m-2256m

Nordkette is definitely the most accessible resort on this list, thanks to the direct cable car link from the city. However, don’t expect a large-scale resort—it’s fairly modest with just 13 kilometers of slopes, best suited for confident riders due to its steep terrain. The facilities include ski rentals and a nice restaurant, but there are no slope-side accommodations.

Thankfully, snow reliability is good, with decent conditions common in winter due to its high elevation. However, the lower slopes can be less reliable, so it’s best to visit in late January or February for optimal coverage. Although snowmaking is fairly limited, Nordkette is still a top contender for a weekend break, especially if you want to explore the city and ski in the mornings. Staying in Innsbruck is essential, as there is no on-mountain lodging. The après-ski scene is quiet, catering more to families with serene post-ski meals rather than lively parties.

Muttereralm

Muttereralm
  • Where: Mutters
  • Distance from Innsbruck: 16km, 20 minutes
  • Skiable terrain: 15km
  • Elevation: 860m-1800m

Muttereralm is located just 20 minutes away by car from Innsbruck, but a regular ski bus runs back and forth, making it one of the most accessible on this list. There are 15 kilometers of slopes available for those looking to ski, along with toboggan runs for a bit of variety, which is especially great for those traveling with kids. The mountain offers ski schools and rentals, too, so you don’t have to carry lots of gear from the city — another bonus if you’re travelling with little ones.

Snow reliability is pretty good, and recent upgrades to the snowmaking system ensure extensive coverage throughout the season. Like the first resort on our list, you’ll need to stay in Innsbruck and take a transfer each day, so if you were hoping to ski back to your hotel in the evening, Muttereralm might not be ideal. The vibe here is calm and family-oriented, so for a livelier après-ski experience, head back to Innsbruck and enjoy one of the many food and drink options available.

Rangger Köpfl

Rangger Köpfl
  • Where: Oberperfuss
  • Distance from Innsbruck: 17km, 25 minutes
  • Skiable terrain: 17km
  • Elevation: 820m-2000m

Rangger Köpfl is another sub-30-minute trip from Innsbruck, accessible via private transfer or bus. The resort offers 17 kilometers of slopes, making it modest in size but still offering plenty to do. Facilities include rental services, several cafes, and a main restaurant, though don't expect luxury as the focus is more on skiing than hospitality.

Snow reliability is generally good, but the lower altitude can affect conditions, especially in the early and late seasons. It’s best to visit in the middle of winter during a good season for optimal snow coverage. The resort is quieter than others, making it ideal for children and inexperienced skiers who need more room to move around. It also features a long natural toboggan run, offering a great diversion if you’re not skiing. Accommodation options are few and modest, so staying in Innsbruck is recommended, where there are more choices to suit all budgets.

Patscherkofel Ski Area

Patscherkofel Ski Area
  • Where: Igls
  • Distance from Innsbruck: 18km, 30 minutes
  • Skiable terrain: 18km

Patscherkofel is an easy 30-minute trip by car or bus from Innsbruck, with plenty of transfers running multiple times a day. It’s slightly larger than Nordkette, offering 18 kilometers of slopes and better facilities, including ski schools and rental shops.  Modern snowmaking capabilities ensure good snow reliability throughout the season, though the lower altitude can affect snow quality, especially early on. Patscherkofel is especially well-suited for families and beginners, with a network of green and blue trails ideal for those just starting out.

Accommodation is limited at the resort, so it’s better to stay in Innsbruck and use the provided transfers. The après-ski options are modest, catering more to families, so it might not suit adult groups seeking a lively scene. However, it’s a fun resort worth checking out if you’re looking to experience multiple locations while staying in the city.

Axamer Lizum

Axamer Lizum

This is the largest nearby resort, boasting over 40 kilometers of slopes.
